2013 Jesse Tree: Jacob

Scripture: Genesis 28:11-22
.
Event/Theme: Jacob
.
Symbol we use: I broke a popsicle stick into thirds, then glued the pieces in between two other popsicle sticks to form a ladder.
.
Meditation: Jacob didn't seek out the Lord. He hadn't made a commitment to Him, he hadn't paid tithes to Him, he didn't choose his resting place because he knew he would receive a dream there. The Lord sought him out as he tried to flee his brother and the damage he had inflicted on their relationship. Without a word of commitment from Jacob God promised to bless him, provide for him, and protect him, remaining with him during his life and with his descendants after his death.
.
The Lord makes the same kind of commitment to us long before we turn to Him. Nobody seeks after God only to receive a response that He's too busy right now, He will return the call later. When we're ready to listen, He is ready to bless. Granted, that blessing might not be quite what we hope for. Remember that Jacob still had to continue his journey, still had to work more than 14 years for Laban, still ran away from his father-in-law while he was busy elsewhere, still struggled to maintain a semblance of harmony in his household. Yet with the Lord blessing him he always had "food to eat and clothes to wear" and returned safely to his father with his wives, children, and wealth and received the Lord's protection and guidance. Have you experienced the Lord seeking you out and have you responded to His act of commitment to you?
