Jesse Tree: Jonah

Scripture: Jonah 1:1-17
.
Event/Theme: Jonah
.
Symbol we use: Picture of a fish or a whale
.
Meditation: Jonah was asked to preach repentance to the evil people in the city of Nineveh. He didn't want to because they were very evil and he didn't want the Lord to have mercy and forgive them. A few hundred years later Jesus was born to offer mercy and forgiveness to everyone, no matter how evil and undeserving we may be. All of us, as we go through life, will encounter people we dislike just as Jonah disliked the people of Nineveh--people who hurt us and do horrible things to us and to the people we love most of all. It might be difficult to forgive them and to speak to them about God's willingness to forgive every wrongdoing. We might even want to run away just like Jonah tried to run away from God's command to bring His message to the people of Nineveh. Yet God's mercy is available for everyone, no matter how evil, just as it was available for the people of Nineveh who did choose to repent of their sins.
