Psalm 51:14-17
Only God can fully restore our relationship with Him. Have you ever had someone hurt you and then pretend that nothing had happened? No matter how nicely they treat you afterward, it feels like the friendship is not quite right until the wrongdoing is admitted and dealt with. There is a sore which can't quite be hidden because it still hurts. It's important to remember this when we hurt another person; apologizing for our wrongdoing helps heal the pain we cause and helps in restoring the friendship. Of course we can never hide any sin from God and every sin we commit against any person is also a sin against God. Yet when we apologize to Him, He always forgives. He always welcomes us back into a better relationship with Him. We are not confessing our sins because He doesn't know what they are; we confess them because we have to ask Him to forgive us. We cannot pretend they don't exist and still have a good relationship with God.
