By Whose Authority?

Jeremiah 18:3-6

I attended a talk last night given by Janet Smith. Although she didn't quote this particular passage, she made the point that the one who gives a right is the only one with the authority to take it away again. In other words, our right to live is given by God and belongs to Him, so we do not have the right to murder ourselves or anyone else regardless of whether the State says it is "legal" or not. The State simply doesn't have the authority to regulate our right to live since that authority comes from God and hasn't been entrusted to the State at any point.

As Jeremiah pointed out, we belong to God. He created us, He "owns" us, He ultimately has complete authority over us. We can talk and debate and legalize all we want about abortion, assisted suicide, homosexuality, slavery, etc., but the Giver of Life hasn't given us the authority to legalize them, period. Whether the State has decided they are legal or not, they are still always wrong, always contrary to the will of the One who created us. The State may pretend it has the right to legalize them, but it really doesn't because it hasn't been given that authority by the One who created that right.
