Forgiving Past Wrongdoing

While coloring a book about our state, all my 5yr could talk about was the time her sister had hit her with a rock. So much for the educational merits of "our state rock" and "our state gem".

As she went on and on about the incident, which I don't remember in the least, I sarcastically told her, "Good thing you forgave her." "I didn't," she replied. Me: "Well, it's never too late. Better late than never." She thought about this for a few minutes, then called to her sister in the other room, "Remember that time you hit me with a rock? Well, I forgive you."
.
This was apparently unacceptable to 4yr sister who responded, "No! I'm supposed to say I'm sorry. Then you forgive me."
