A baby who acts like a baby is cooed at and cuddled. A child or adult (without an obvious disability) who acts like a baby is reviled and rejected. We ignore our spiritual maturity or immaturity because it is less visible to our physical eyes yet it is even more important in the long term. When you examine your own spiritual maturity then, what do you see? Paul examined himself and realized the Law was speaking to him as an adult but he was not spiritually capable of responding with the maturity of an adult. The fault was in himself rather than the Law, as it is in each of us as fellow human beings. We are fleshly; we are childish; we are immature. We need to be transformed in order to follow God's will for us, glimpsed in the Law of the Old Testament and expanded upon throughout the New Testament. To stay in the baby stage of a fleshly human being is like an adult throwing a temper tantrum. You have the freedom to stay there, but I choose to grow up.
