Paul says he is hoping to visit Rome to offer a gift to encourage the Christians there, yet what a gift and encouragement his letter, written because of his absence, has been to so many Christians throughout the centuries. I doubt he realized when he wrote this letter what an impact it would have or how many hundreds and thousands of years it would survive.
I'll admit that I'm not always looking for ways that I can benefit others. I'm too selfish, too focused on my own needs and desires and the ways other people can benefit me. Yet Paul offers this desire to give of himself as his primary reason for wanting to visit Rome. May I grow to have a similar attitude to give of myself for the benefit of other people.
