Mark 11:11-14
This seems completely unfair to the fig tree until I change my perspective. It was pointed out to me not too long ago that about a year earlier Jesus gave the parable in Luke 13:6-9 about a fig tree that was not bearing fruit. The owner had decided to give up on the tree after giving it three years to produce, but the grower asked for one more year to tend to it and see if it would be fruitful. Jesus as a grower also gave the Israelite people one more year to respond to His teaching, but they still did not "bear fruit". The fig tree He cursed was only the symbolic representation of the people.
So am I bearing the expected fruit? I have certainly been well cared for and tended to. I have no excuse not to. May I not be lazy and unresponsive, but rather full of fruit regardless of the season so when my Owner comes by He will not see me as a dead tree that needs to be cut down.
