John 13:14-15 |
An adopted child becomes a member of the family. The child learns the family humor, the family history, the family expectations, the family goals. He or she adapts to the family schedule, might take on the family name. As adopted children of God, the family we're adopted into welcomes us but doesn't change for us. Another adopting family would make a lot of changes for the sake of the adopted child, but in this case, we're the ones who need to change to adapt to our new family. We need to take on the family traits (love, joy, peace, patience, etc.) as well as the family name and always strive to become better members of the family. We are in this family to glorify God and we won't be able to do so if we're off doing our own thing, calling ourselves members of the family but not trying to live as members of the family.
